  When cousins Ilario and Leopoldo Ruffino embraced their passion for winemaking in 1877, opening a small winery in Pontassieve near Florence, the region already had a centuries-old tradition of growing exceptional wine grapes. Famous for consistency and quality, Ruffino has established itself as a leader in chianti, and Ruffino Chianti has become a global ambassador of Tuscan wines. When chianti first became recognized as a DOCG wine in 1984, Ruffino Chianti DOCG was awarded the first warranty strip. More than 140 years after its founding and more than 90 years after Riserva Ducale's release, Ruffino carries on Italy's history and heritage.   Robert Mondavi was a pioneer and innovator in the California wine industry. After the outstanding success of his Napa Valley winery, Robert Mondavi pursued his second vision of creating delicious wines for everyday enjoyment. Having grown up in Lodi, Robert knew the region was ideal for growing high-quality grapes from which he could produce excellent wines at affordable prices. In 1979, he acquired a local cooperative of grape growers, naming the winery after a nearby town, and the Woodbridge Winery was born. In fact, Woodbridge Winery was the first major winery to use the "Direct-To-Press" method for making white wine on a large scale.
